linlithgow solo exhibition until 21 sept 2025

A striking new exhibition that aims to question how we look at art and its materials has been opened in The Gallery at Linlithgow Burgh Halls.

‘Part of the work is also to do with scale, partly because I became interested in how we see things everyday. It seems that we are now able to view the whole world in miniature on our phones. A scale model of the gallery where you can imagine you are a giant within the walls, hanging with the wee velvet vessels paintings.’ Nicola Atkinson Artist

The artist work extends what is the exhibition proper, out through the window of the Gallery onto the Bus Shelter on High street at the Linlithgow Cross Stop no: 6290LW08. You can experience the artwork further at the artists’ talk, in your home, by wearing it, by listening on your phone and in a book.

The residents of Linlithgow and the surrounding area can borrow one of the Nicola Atkinson Beautiful Materials artworks for their homes, a domestic version of an exhibition.

“As an artist I spend a lot of time living with my own work after I have made it.  I hope that this will enhance the experiences of the Beautiful Materials exhibition, by connecting your home to The Gallery at Linlithgow Burgh Halls ” Nicola Atkinson Artist

In a recent survey for museums, it said that a person spends on average 28 seconds looking at a piece of art.  This exhibition offers the visitor an opportunity to have a little more time with an artwork, to understand how the relationship to it can grow or change, in the comfort of their own home.

Internationally acclaimed, multi-disciplinary artist Nicola specialises in artworks that focus on place-making, social cohesion and community engagement and has worked on 145 artworks on permanent display in museums around the world.

Beautiful Materials is a solo exhibition of new works by Glasgow based artist Nicola Atkinson and can be viewed for free at the West Lothian Linlithgow Burgh Halls and the bus shelter Linlithgow Cross Stop no: 6290LW08 until Sunday 21 September.
