At its heart the works by Nicola Atkinson, Beautiful Materials, asks How do we look at art and its materials and what are its boundaries? These works are also to do with scale, partly because she became interested in how we see things everyday. It seems that we are now able to view the whole world in miniature on our phones.

The vessel is a container for ideas, and materials, but perhaps we too are also containers in some ways. The vessels have gone on a journey of material metamorphosis from painting on wood, to printing on velvet beautiful fabric.

Beautiful Materials is a solo exhibition of new works by award-winning Glasgow based artist Nicola Atkinson and can be viewed for free at the West Lothian gallery Friday 23 May to Sunday 21 September 2025

The striking exhibition, which extends from the walls of the gallery, an exhibition in the model of Linlithgow Burgh Halls Gallery, including the transformation of a high street bus shelter and people homes, aims to question how we look at art and its materials.
