W 15 x D 15 x H 15 cms approx

Materials: shredded withdrawn banknotes, polystyrene, PVA, wood, glass

Part of a body of work called ‘Making ends meet’, this small assemblage was first shown in A Model Gallery by Beautiful Materials, April 2026. Fragments of shredded Bank of England banknotes are assembled on the surface of a globe and transfixed inside a glass sphere.

'Making ends meet' is a series of small artworks created from fragments of obsolete banknotes along with some hand printed and toned cyanotype photographs. These are recreations of some of the imagery found on withdrawn and current Bank of England currency. The portraits depict notable historical figures that represent cultural, scientific and political achievement and are paired with imagery linked to their lives and work.

Removed from circulation, currency no longer holds monetary value, yet here it gains a different kind of worth and invites reflection on what endures beyond economics.

Celine Mcilmunn graduated from Glasgow School of Art in 2003 and has since then worked in Project Ability, a visual arts organisation supporting people with disabilities and mental health challenges to express themselves and achieve artistic excellence.

NOTE: 'It makes the world goes round' is available to be view in Beautiful Materials Gallery until 3 May 2026
